Tokyo Salsa Regular Events Guide

27 11 2010

My hubby and I are leaving Japan soon to set up our new home in Breda, the Netherlands.

Which means I will not be able to update my monthly Tokyo Salsa Calendar (okay it hasn’t been updated for a few months any way), but I thought I’d leave a general guide to Tokyo salsa events here for anyone planning a trip. Please also see my Salsa in Tokyo page for information about salsa clubs and other venues.

1st Monday of month:
Cuban Night @ Dope Lounge Gekijoumae, Ikebukuro
There are two Dope Lounges in Ikebukuro so make sure you go to the right one, and you’ll find this laid back weekday night of Cuban style dancing.

1st Wednesday of month:
Ms Salsa DIX Wednesday @ DIX Lounge
If you don’t like dancing in studios with zero atmosphere, here’s an event held at a luxurious night club near Azabu Juban station for you to try. Mostly on1.

1st Saturday of month:
Mambongo @ Studio Pepe-2
Undoubtedly the biggest on2 social in Tokyo, always packed full with good dancers. If you are an advanced male on-2 dancer, expect to be kept very busy as the event is almost always short of men.

2nd Saturday of month:
Samurai-Inn @ Studio Pepe-2
DJ Samurai’s monthly gig, with mostly on2 dancers. The pre-dancing lesson is always cha-cha, so if you are a cha-cha lover, be sure to check this out.

Cu Cu Cuban Night @ White Room
If Salsa Cubano is your thing, Riko hosts a monthly social at this club hidden in the backstreets of Roppongi. Mainly attended by Riko’s students (which means it may feel a bit cliquey, but the standard is high).

2nd Sunday of month:
Salsa Sunday Night @ Hilton Hotel Tokyo
A dress-up salsa event in the lounge of Hilton Hotel Tokyo. Pricy, but with a free bar (wince, beer, cocktails and soft drinks). Attendance generally depends on who are performing on the night, but it’s a nice laid-back social where you can actually chat with local dancers over a drink not just dance with them.

3rd Friday of month:
Nao&Masa’s “Odora-night” @ Studio Pepe-2
Monthly on2 social hosted by Nao & Masa. Friday nights socials tend to be a bit quieter in Tokyo, which means you have plenty of space to dance.

3rd Saturday of month:
This date on the calendar has a reputation as the mambo war zone, with several events competing for their share of the not-so-huge on2 pie. The standard fixtures are:
Tokyo Latin Night @ Studio Pepe-2
Mambo Fever @ Pacion Latina (formerly known as Zero Hour)
often with others muscling in with one-off events.

3rd Sunday of month:
Concept Salsa @ Fiesta Latina
A relaxed social in a small studio, says “all styles” but usually 95% on2. NOTE: No street shoes. Different dress theme every month.

4th Saturday of month:
Tim Cuba @ Copacabana
One of the longest running salsa socials in Tokyo. Music is not all Cuban but dancing usually is. It’s like the Cuban equivalent of Mambongo – packed, hot, short of men, good standard of dancing.

Salsa Hotline Night (Salho) @ Max Climax
The biggest monthly event in Tokyo, with two floors (both packed). Starts early, finishes early (11:30pm!!), with a long break in the middle for performances (and competition in summer months). On1 and On2. It’s on the last Saturday of month (either 4th or 5th) except in May and October.

4th Sunday of month:
Hya-Que Social @ Tamai Dance School, Shibuya
Seen the original Japanese version of the movie “Shall We Dance?” The studio featured in the movie is home to this small on2 social with a family atmosphere, hosted by Hya-Que (K-suke & A-jun). Less intimidating than some of the bigger on2 socials. Sometimes on the 5th Sunday so check with Hya-Que first.

5th Saturday of month:
Copa-ru @ Copacabana
In months with five Saturdays, the last Saturday sees Riko taking her Cuban social to Copacabana.

Irregular events:
Mucho Mucho Mambo @ AMRTA (at present – check with the organisers)
Does what it says on the tin. Formerly a Friday studio social, not transformed into a late-finish club event, with an adventurous music policy courtesy of DJ Ajad (Osaka) and a guest DJ.

Non-smoking (Kin-en) Salsa, Platina Salsa & Organic Salsa @ various venues
Popular events that attract good dancers can end up quite intimidating for less experienced dancers. But fear not – these three well-established early-evening salsa events cater to relative newbies, with newbie-friendly dancers and newbie-friendly music. They all have an irregular schedule of a few Sat/Sunday evenings per month, held at various community centre venues (and some dance studios), with a cheap entry and early finish. For dates and venues, check their respective websites.

Salsa maps!

27 05 2010

I was recently asked about salsa venues in Kobe. I asked a salsa pal based there, got the necessary info and started writing a reply. Initially I was going to give a list of salsa venues with their addresses, but then I remembered this handy little tool mapping the Mecca of NY Salsa, which another salsa friend of mine on Salsa Forums made a while ago:

New York Salsa Map
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=105526088631276893366.000448f96147c096082d4&z=12

So instead, I decided to create a salsa map of Kobe.

Kobe Salsa Map
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=118310217711358169106.00048789038700e9357eb&z=16

Now it seemed only natural that I had to make one for Tokyo… so here it is:

Tokyo Salsa Map
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=118310217711358169106.00048789f45b5cbdc34b2&z=12
I’ve added the Tokyo map to the Salsa in Tokyo page of this blog.

I’ve also started on an Osaka map, and salsa maps for London and Edinburgh are also in the pipeline. I will add the links once I’ve got enough content.

Hope these maps help… comments, suggestions and contributions welcome.

EDIT:
This Salsa Forums friend has since created a few more salsa maps of his – check his page out for the salsa maps of Vancouver, Portland and San Francisco.
